I am having the same problem with the render speeds. We are editing shows in Apple Pro Res 422 HD (HQ). They are 1080i, 29.97 drop frame, and under 6.0.1 we had NO problems in Pro Res.
We switched our edit from 720p DVCProHD because of the square pixel bug in 6.0.1. Now it appears that the square pixel bug is fixed and the render times have become astronomical! We are currently using Tiger 10.4.11, because Kona has not yet upgraded the Lhe drivers for Leopard. Is this render issue also in Leopard as well as Tiger? If ANYONE knows what is going on can they tell those of us who are in panic mode! I have been an FCP user since version 1.2, and I have NEVER seen a bigger bunch of major errors in ANY of the previous versions. Hi - I am having the same problem.
Since the 6.0.2 update render times in FCP have jumped from a typical 10mins for a short 10min sequence (Motion round trip) to a massive 8+ hours. I am missing deadlines all over the place and have clients screaming at me! Desperate in the UK! We have not changed anything in our settings, just simply upgraded with good intentions.
We have dumped preferences as recommended on another thread but has made no impact. We have de-selected render motion in best quality option and changed from 'best' to 'normal' which has seen a very slight improvement but not significant. Editing 1080i 25fps footage using apple intermediate codec and exporting (if we ever get lucky enough to do an export!!) the same. We have masses of unused RAM (4GB free during render) and tonnes of disk space (over 400Gig spare). We are working using internal disks. Any ideas as we have drawn a blank.
Thank you all. Hi Grant, it's Aysh again. I thought you might like to read a quick update from us. After a mass of stress and anxiety, we completely removed FCP and went back to v6.0.0 and the problems (we had numerous issues which ranged from crippling render times, unexpected crashes during render, and lost render files after a re-start) still persisted. We performed numerous tests and this started to point more to OS X 10.4.11 so we then bit the bullet and upgraded to Leopard 10.5.1 as we had already been running Leopard on another machine as a test. We installed all available updates (Quicktime, FC Studio and Leopard) which was a nail biting few hours but with great results. It seems my massive list of snags have all been resolved.
I am not suggesting that this is the solution for you (ie I am officially devolving all responsibility and accountability!!), but thought you might like to hear what worked for us. Aysh (aka Happy in the UK!).
Aysh, Thanks for all the nail-biting, anxiety ridden work! I was about to go into the studio to strip down the machines to FCP 6.0, so THANK YOU FOR THE INFO!! I am going to upgrade the machines to Leopard, and then if AJA has no time frame for upgrades, I will replace our Kona cards with the Multibridge.
I have 3 Kona Lhe cards, and it is worth the expense to switch to a card whose company can keep up with the operating systems. I should be heading for the UK in January to start some productions. Depending on where your facility is, I would love to meet you and thank you with a pint or 2 or 3. Apple Footer.
